Hair porosity is a term that’s been thrown around with very little explanation for entirely too long. What does it mean?! My hair has pores?! Short answer: yes. Long answer: those pores and how large they are determine how moisture is absorbed by hair and whether it gets absorbed at all. Hydration is an essential part of living, and it’s the most important part of hair maintenance. So if you’ve ever done your whole routine — creams, conditioners, oils, everything — and your hair is still dry? Yeah, your hair is probably very porous and requires a certain level of TLC that you don’t know about yet. Obviously, this can be annoying because hair products are expensive. We feel your pain, sis. This is why we do what we do.
The porosity of your hair determines how well moisture is able to pass through and be retained. The outer layer of the hair, also known as the cuticle, is what allows moisture in and out. Sometimes, the cuticle is so open that moisture slides right through, leaving nothing but a trace of its existence behind. Other times, it’s so closed that moisture can’t even get in, let alone get out.
Characteristics of High Porosity Hair
• Curls easily absorb water, however, it requires more products.
• Curls often look and feel dry.
• Curls are often frizzy.
• Curls dry quickly.
SO WHAT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE RICE WATER HAIR MASK & TRADITIONAL RICE WATER
The short answer is a balance. Like we did with our Henna Hair Gloss and Fenugreek Hair Mask we took an ingredient that is amazing on its own but can be problematic for many because of it’s strength and balanced it with other ingredients to make it more gentle and moisturizing.
TRADITIONAL RICE WATER
Ingredient readily accessible
Very potent, easy to misuse and then cause breakage
Not balanced, can cause a drying effect
Will have to add other ingredients to conteract smell and drying effects
BELLE BAR ORGANIC RICE WATER HAIR MASK
Created to be balancing
Ingredients added to also help heal the scalp and balance the ph of the scalp
Safe to use for low porosity hair
Adds strength and softens hair, you will not feel the drying effects of the rice water
Will help in growing and retaining hair length if used properly
Rice water is a strengthening/protein treatment so the same protein rules apply
WASH DAY
Our strengthening/protein treatments are balanced as to turn down the effects of a pure protein treatment, so they are safe for you to use.
Rotate your strengthening and moisture masks. This is how it goes WEEK #1 RICE MASK, WEEK #2 MOISTURE MASK, WEEK #3 RICE MASK, WEEK #4 MOISTURE MASK, WEEK #5 RICE MASK.
Henna, fenugreek and rice water, these are all strengthening/protein treatments. While you can use these masks more than once a month, you CANNOT use them back to back, week to week. You have to rotate them with a moisturizing mask.
Your mix in ingredient with the hair mask should be warm as well. Do not use the microwave, warm your water on the stove or warm your ingredient using a double boiler.
Go the extra mile and use a blended avocado, pumpkin or banana with your hair mask instead of just conditioner. You NEED the moisture! (skip the banana if you have really fine hair, it tends to over-moisturize).
Make sure to get the mask on your scalp we added extra goodies to the hair mask to soothe and balance your scalp. A healthy scalp is very important to hair health and hair growth.
WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT LEAVE THE RICE WATER IN YOUR HAIR. WHILE YOUR HAIR NEEDS PROTEIN, WE STILL THINK IT CAN BE TOO MUCH. LEAVE IN WITH CAUTION.
Make sure to close your hair cuticle with a cold water rinse at the end of your moisture routine. That will help keep the moisture in your hair strand.
Co-wash the mask out and then follow a moisturizing routine after and style as usual.
MAINTENANCE
While you can use more protein than your counterparts you still need to read your labels, and not use your tea rinses more than 3 times a week. BE PATIENT. More is not more. Overuse of protein will cause breakage. Every time!
Throughout the week, you want to moisturize your hair while damp versus thoroughly wet or dry because the pores would either be too full or too flat to reap the benefits. You can use a tea rinse but NO MORE than 3 times a week. Water, aloe vera juice is your best friend. You need to rotate throughout the week.
You must use Oil and Cream/Butter to seal the moisture in. Moisture will easily pass in and out of your hair. Sealing your hair is the only way to retain moisture.
