So, what is rice water? It’s actually pretty simple. If you boil rice as per usual, the milky water that the boiled rice produces is rice water. You can use white, brown, jasmine, basmati or any other type of rice for most recipes.
1. NOT A TREND
Most naturals have recently discovered an amazing DIY protein, strengthening and repairing treatment called a rice water rinse. While using rice water as a treatment to grow your hair in the natural hair care community, using rice water isn’t a “trend”, it has been used for hundreds of years in China and Japan.
You may have heard about the Yao women from China. ” A thousand miles from Beijing, the village of Huang Luo in China’s Guangxi Region is famous for the dramatically long hair worn by its female residents. These manes require special maintenance. The hair is washed—lowered, really—into rice water that has been combined with a few other organic ingredients. The mixture is boiled in a pot and then poured into an enamel bowl; a wooden comb is used to methodically work the solution into the hair from tip to root. This routine is said to be the reason for the hair’s preternatural shine and luster and the way it remains pitch-black even when the possessor is quite elderly.” – Vogue.com
2. RICE WATER IS PROTEIN
Rice water is surprisingly beneficial to hair because it contains an impressive array of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and amino acids – the building blocks of protein. Rice water contains 16% protein, making it an effective DIY protein treatment. Use it to strengthen your hair, and add sheen by smoothing the cuticle.
Being that rice water is protein, you need to use it cautiously. You need to use it appropriately for your hair porosity to not cause breakage. This is one occasion where less is more is the way to go!
